In short
- To file a residence application in MOS, you log in through login.gov.pl, usually with a Profil Zaufany.
- You need a PESEL number first; then you confirm the profile through your Polish bank or in person.
- Never share your login details: the account, and the application, must be yours.
Since 27 April 2026, applications for temporary residence, permanent residence and EU long-term residence are filed only online, in MOS. To open a MOS account you need a way to log in through login.gov.pl, and for most foreigners that means a Trusted Profile (profil zaufany). Here is how to get one.
What a Trusted Profile is
A Trusted Profile is a free electronic identity for Polish public services. It lets you log in to government websites and sign documents online. In MOS, you use it both to open your account and to sign your application. You can also log in with a qualified electronic signature, which you buy from a certified provider, or with a Polish e-ID card, which foreigners don't normally have.
Step 1: get a PESEL number
A Trusted Profile needs a PESEL number. You get one in one of two ways:
- Automatically, when you register your address in Poland (zameldowanie) for a stay of 30 days or more.
- On request, at any municipal office (urząd gminy), free of charge. Explain why you need the number; the office may ask for the legal basis.
Step 2: confirm your profile
There are two common routes:
- Through your bank. If you have a Polish bank account with online banking, choose "Banks and other providers" on the Trusted Profile page and log in with your bank. Most Polish banks offer this. It's the quickest route, but banks usually need your PESEL to open an account in the first place.
- In person. Fill in the request online, then go to a confirmation point (punkt potwierdzający), for example at a municipal or tax office, with your passport. Enter your name exactly as it appears in your identity document: it can't be corrected after the request is sent. Give an email address and a phone number that can receive Polish text messages.
Is this your situation? Two minutes will tell.
Step 3: log in to MOS
- Go to mos.cudzoziemcy.gov.pl and choose to log in.
- MOS sends you to login.gov.pl. Log in with your Trusted Profile.
- Fill in the short registration form and click the activation link sent to your email.
You can now start your application. Old MOS accounts were deleted in April 2026, so even returning users need a new one. Read how to apply, step by step.
If the Trusted Profile doesn't work for you
If you can't confirm a Trusted Profile in time, for example because you don't have a PESEL yet, a qualified electronic signature is the other common way to log in and sign. You buy it from a certified provider; it usually comes with a card reader or a mobile app and is valid for one to three years. Whatever you choose, set it up well before your current visa or permit expires: MOS can't accept an application you can't sign.
Keep it valid
A Trusted Profile is valid for three years. You can extend it yourself before it expires. If your application is still being decided, keep your profile active: you may need it to sign further documents.
Mistakes to avoid
- Sharing your login. The Office for Foreigners warns never to give anyone your login.gov.pl details. The account and everything filed from it are legally yours.
- Paying for a "fast" profile. Setting up a Trusted Profile is free. The confirmation system flags unusual patterns, such as many foreigners' profiles confirmed at one point in a short time.
- A misspelt name. A name that doesn't match your passport can cause problems later in MOS.

Questions
No. It is your personal electronic identity, and the MOS account opened with it is yours. Anyone can help you understand the steps, but you confirm the profile and log in yourself.
Nothing. Setting up and using a Trusted Profile is free, and so is filing in MOS. Only the stamp duty and the card fee are paid.
Apply for one at any municipal office. A PESEL is also assigned automatically when you register your address for a stay of 30 days or more.
